Indicator (long name):
Total public social protection expenditure as percentage of GDP
Indicator (short name):
SEPXPD
Definition:
Most of the data in the ILO World Social Protection Database are collected through the ILO Social Security Inquiry (SSI), the ILOs periodic collection of administrative data available here:
https://www.social-protection.org/gimi/ShowRessource.action?id=20120
. The notion of social security adopted in the SSI covers all measures providing benefits, whether in cash or in kind, to secure protection, inter alia, from: (a) lack of work-related income (or insufficient income) caused by sickness, disability, maternity, employment injury, unemployment, old age, or death of a family member; (b) lack of access or unaffordable access to health care; (c) insufficient family support, particularly for children and adult dependants; (d) general poverty and social exclusion.
